Abu Dhabi ('father of the Gazelle') is the capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Abu Dhabi is one of the most modern cities in the world due to the rapid growth since 1980. Therefore, the city mainly presents a new face. Generously built roads and architecturally distinctive buildings partly with Arab elements characterise the city. In between some a few traces of earlier centuries are to be found, such as the Fort of Qasr al-Husn, traditional buildings, residential buildings and countless, mostly newly built mosques whose most important is the Sheikh Zayed mosque. Characteristic of the city are the many small shops on the ground floor of the buildings, which were not displaced so far by the large, ultra-modern shopping malls. Furthermore, the high green component of along all roads in the Emirate is very striking.
